Unless you’re remodeling, many of us find ourselves calling a plumber in a panic. It can be hard to carefully screen plumbers when you’re dealing with a burst pipe, but it’s still important to ask a few questions. River City Plumbing here in Reno is sharing three tips for hiring a reputable plumber.
Always Ask for Qualifications
You can assess a plumber’s credentials pretty quickly. Ask whether the company is licensed, bonded and insured. Ask how long the company has been in business, and what kinds of certifications they hold. And finally, inquire as to whom exactly will be doing the repairs.
Consider Customer Service
When you contact the company, how are you treated? Ask the plumber whether they have direct experience with your plumbing problem. Take note of whether the plumber takes time to explain any jargon or technical difficulties so you really understand the problem and the recommended course of action. While time is of the essence when you’re dealing with a plumbing emergency, you should still get an estimate that includes parts and labor. A written estimate should include the following:
- Repair type
- Hourly rate
- Estimated time for the repair
- Estimated costs for materials
- Additional fees, such as travel time or emergency service
- Payment terms
If you have time, it’s a good idea to inquire about problems outside the scope of the quoted work. Ask about guarantees on work performed. Reputable plumbers tend to guarantee their work for a specific timeframe, and that includes parts.
Consider Planning Ahead
It’s difficult to think critically when you’re dealing with an emergency, and sorting out things like plumbers and electricians before you need them can save you time and aggravation. The first plumbing company you call in a crisis may not be the same company you’d hire if you’d had time for proper vetting, so do that now. Take time to find a trusted plumber before you need one.
